Someone who is courageous, intelligent and has reached a significant achievement is called a hero. A man named Andrew Carnegie, born in Scotland in 1835, does not fit this definition of hero. Carnegie started off as a poor man who developed into a very successful businessman. He had intelligent business skills, including vertical integration which made him a rich man. However, his success does not define him as a hero. He’s an ambitious man that lacks the significant achievement and the care for others.
Andrew Carnegie was an ambitious man, who focused mostly on success not the people. He was determined to succeed by using his business skills. Carnegie was one of the first to use vertical integration, which is the control of the production process from raw materials to manufacture and sale of finished product. He owned many properties using vertical integration. (Negronida 2008). Vertical integration increases competitiveness. Carnegie donated a total amount of 271,013,000 where most it went to education (Wall 1970). This action shows him as a generous person, but it’s not considered much of a big achievement. A significant achievement should change the world in some way. Carnegie’s donation didn’t change anything. Therefore, he is not a hero. Carnegie started as a poor man and developed into a successful, rich man. In a photo, it demonstrates Carnegie living in an attic room with his family along with another family. However, in another photo, it displays a picture of a castle where renovation cost was 10,000,000 (Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh 2008). Carnegie developed into a successful man, but his development in a rich man didn’t make some form of change, therefore he is not considered a hero.
