Andrew Foster: A Missionary, An Educator, And A Mentor Caroline Zettler 11/25/2015 Orientation of Deafness Abstract Andrew Foster was a missionary, an educator, and a mentor. Foster became deaf from an illness he developed when he was a child. He overcame his barriers to become a highly educated individual that make a huge impact on the deaf community. After realizing his calling in a Sunday school class, Foster decided to be a missionary in Africa for deaf children. This is where Foster’s legacy took off. Foster started with just one classroom he was borrowing until he was about to get some land. Before Foster passed away, he had established 32 schools for the deaf throughout Africa. Foster made an impact on every student he interacted with. He pushed each student to become a leader and to seek knowledge. He taught everyone to never let barriers like being deaf or race stand in your path of success. If you have a passion, anything is possible. First, he was an educator. Foster used his knowledge to help shape the children of Africa. His knowledge helped so many children grow up to live successful lives instead of being hidden from society. Second, Foster was a mentor to several deaf children in Africa. He showed them a way to success and knowledge. Also, he showed the rest of the world that everyone deserves an education.
