In the work, Roberts, donning the robes of a Pope, perversely splays himself beneath an archangel’s uncertain gaze, as he reaches for the angels’ genitals. The artist uses his work to ironically question ‘otherness’ and ‘Christ-consciousness’ (Berry 2005, p. 82). Roberts has created this work as a reflection of his religious past, his sexuality and childhood alienation. Raised in a Catholic household, Roberts has stated, in conversation with Doug Hall, that he, “…attended church almost daily” and was, “…very much the ideal candidate for priesthood” (YouTube 2008). However, the artist suffered a ‘religious crisis’ whilst attending art school and coming to terms with his sexual identity (YouTube 2008).

In the trial of Paul Honer being sentenced to one year in prison for refusing to marry to gay couples, can be seen as just to some and injustice to others. The two prospective carry truth and opinion, but yet hold constitutional security in both making this all the more challenging of the case. Some may argue that this pastor refusing to marry the gay couple is a lack of reflection of god’s love refuting the way of the Christian religion. Stating, Ephesians 4:2 “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” this scripture seeming to speak on accepting love and showing love by marring a gay couple in love.

In The Hunger Games by Suzzane Collins, the same idea is explored, they both draw strong parallels about the idea of how much control and power the authority has. The impotence of the collective results in the unwillingness of the government to come to a conclusion and take action on behalf of the society it governs, through the means of limiting freedoms, enforcing laws with harmful punishment and propaganda. Ultimately, the amount of control the authority has upon it’s citizens plays a tremendous role in both, The Anthem and The Hunger Games.
In the short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, the narrator makes it clear that salvation lies in human contact and connection. In the beginning of the story the narrator shows the lack of love in his relationship with his wife. When the narrators wife tells him about inviting a blind man over, he feels weird about it. The wife says “If you love me,you can do this for me, If you don't love me, okay”.(202) The narrator felt threatened by the man her wife was inviting over.
Christianity, one of the world 's major religions, revolves around love and the importance of loving others. In The Bible mentions to Christians, "Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Leviticus 19:18). Love is of utmost importance in Christianity. In this story, a boyfriend, who does not manifest love and is a hypocrite and a sinner, to his loving girlfriend who is carrying their future baby. The boyfriend, changes and transforms his views of himself throughout the short story.
For Goodness Sex, by Al Vernacchio, is a welcome relief from the two previous books; Girls & Sex and Man Interrupted, as the focus is about sexuality as a whole; gender, sexual orientation, etc., rather than on the culture of females and males. In a chapter titled “Gender Myths,” Vernacchio (2014) asks the question, “male and female, is that all there is” (Vernacchio, A., p. 112, 2014)? In teaching his class on Sexuality and Society, Vernacchio asks these questions and questions similar, demonstrating that he takes into consideration that there are feelings at stake and keeps in mind the human aspect of sex and sexuality as he is intentionally behind challenging students to foresee and develop their sense of values about sex, instead of constantly being “in the moment.”
In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer portrays Greek gods and goddesses as possessing human qualities and faults. Through their actions and emotions, Homer emphasizes the detrimental effects of lust, envy, wrath, and greed in ancient Grecian society. He also never fails to remind readers of the importance of respect for holy figures because of their powerful abilities to create chaos and wonder". Homer wants to prove that gods and humans share a variety of traits, and the only difference is that god don’t allow these flaws negatively to impact their society. To help further his argument, we can compare Greek gods and goddesses to that of Christianity.
