President Andrew Jackson had far more controversy surrounding his name than he had planned. He was infamous for his controversial views dealing with the Nullification Crisis, the removal of several Indians, and the Bank War. These events in history were prominent during his presidency which cause historians to often wonder how he successfully became so powerful with all of these negative aspects surrounding him. Before the Election of 1824, Andrew Jackson was gaining support mainly due to his military victories rather than his political views. Many southern states opposed the increased tax on imported manufactured goods made of wool and various raw materials. South Carolina, in particular, saw the tariff as a way of making the North stronger and more advanced in industrial develpoment with the South having to pay more for goods. So the legislature attempted to “nullify” it and basically make it irrelevant in that state (Eric Foner, ed., Give Me Liberty, 391).
