In the year 1966, after nineteen grueling years in Shawshank prison, after seventeen years of vigorous tunneling through concrete walls, Andy Dufresne escaped. He was one of eleven men to have escaped from the Maine prison. Andy Dufresne was 30 when he arrived at Shawshank prison in 1947, he was a well maintained, sophisticated man. In the outside world, he was the vice-president in the trust department of a Portland bank. He was put in Shawshank after the court had given him two life sentences after he committed the murder of his wife and her lover, or so they thought he did. After Andy’s appeal was turned down, Andy’s close friend Jim set up a false identity by the name of “Peter Stevens”, and invested money for “Peter”, however in 1956, Jim passed away, leaving Peter Steven’s money locked in a safe deposit box in a Portland bank. In addition, Andy states that if he hadn't ended up in Shawshank, he would probably be worth seven to eight million dollars at the time. Andy could have potentially been one of the richest men in the state at the time, but he was locked up in prison, denying him from his riches. Andy mentions that in a hayfield located in Buxton lies a key to the safe deposit box, with all of his funds in it. According to Andy, the contents of the safe deposit box include stock certificates, tax-free municipals, and eighteen bearer bonds worth ten thousand dollars each. After Andy had been framed for a crime he was innocent of, he was put in Shawshank prison, leaving behind his high-class job in a bank, and the future he had ahead of him. Andy states that “Linda and I had about fourteen thousand dollars. Not a big bundle, but hell, we were young.”This indicates that Andy had big things in store for him, not to mention all of his investments and stocks. Some may say that Andy should be considered lucky that he escaped Shawshank, but the entire twenty-year epidemic shouldn’t have happened in the first place. Andy entered Shawshank as a fresh young man and came out old and hardened. In his unfortunate time in Shawshank, furthermore, Andy was raped and attacked by a gang known as “The Sisters” and will forever have to live with these horrid memories. For twenty years Andy was stripped of his freedom and rights, for nothing at his
