Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist who creates his artwork with natural materials from the earth. He creates his works of art with natural, raw materials. Andy Goldsworthy believes that the time spent on his work makes it appear effortless and natural even though it is only temporary. He uses item such as rocks, ice, trees, sticks, as well as many more. His approach to art is both environmentally friendly and very conceptually different from many artists, using the materials he finds in the different environments he works in. He is unique because of his choice in medium and his motives for creating his artwork. I have chosen to represent and analyze three works of art by this artist. This creation uses leaves in order to represent a large horn. This work was created with chestnut leaves and thorns found in the surrounding land. He manipulated the leaves to sit and fit together, the horn starts with a large base twirling into a small point at the tip. The leaves used had to be strong to withstand the manipulation into the horn. This work of art uses one natural material to resemble something also produced in nature. The horn resembles that of an animals tusk or even a man made horn used throughout history as decoration or food storage. Andy Goldsworthy’s art seems so effortless because of all the time spent on it; he takes such time and care with his creations that they look natural. These works are gone soon after creation, which is a hard concept in art. Most artists capture art through painting or sculpture of manufactured materials that last, but Andy Goldsworthy’s use of leaves and natural substances make his work even more substantial. This horn is not necessarily something that seems like it would be straight from nature. “Goldsworthy acknowledges that the landscapes in which he works are hardly primeval.” (Hurley 8).
