She hadn’t purposefully been a Bad Girl. It just happened. Well, maybe she did have some control over it but she didn’t know it was going to happen. It was as if Angelina Christie’s senses completely took leave during the whole of her sixth year of high school. Nothing in particular caused this drastic change; she hadn’t been poisoned or hit on the head or any other situation that could possibly cause her reaction. She simply awoke one Monday morning, bright and early as she usually did. She went on her run around the block, down the hill, through the park and back again. She lied to her parents. It was Christmas and there was a tree and tinsel and twinkling lights and immaculately wrapped gifts. She hated it. Her loathed neighbour Millicent came over to “play”. Millicent always poke fun at Angelina for her appearance, her love for knowledge and books, her bucked teeth, anything that would hurt her. So on Christmas when she visited and boasted about her new Barbie that walked and talked and had a waterfall of blonde hair, Angelina received Charles Darwin’s “Origins of Species” and a Chemistry is Fun kit, she hated herself even more. Chemistry was fun but she wanted more than educational gifts. She wanted that doll. When Millicent asked her what she got for Christmas, already knowing the answer, she waved her beautiful doll around who was saying things like “Hello” and “Excuse me” and “My name is Barbie” and asked if her book could do the same thing. It was then Angelina launched herself at her and pushed hard and continued to kick her harder. There was a flurry of activity with adults, and shouts and Millicent’s continued screams of “It was her! It’s all her fault!” with respective parents pulling their respective child off the other and hurried good-bye’s and slammed doors. It was supposed to be Mummy’s night but he had wanted to see his “good little princess”. He told Angelina it was Christmas. She said I know. He told her to think happy thoughts. She did. She thought of kicking Millicent. Hard. He told her to stop crying. She did. He told her to blow her nose. She did. He told her to smile. Angelina always did as she was told so she smiled.
