Did you know that women are still fighting for equality today? Even though women and African Americans have gained a lot of rights, there are still some that are kept from them. One person that helped women and slaves gain equal rights is Angelina Grimke. Angelina had many accomplishments that gained her popularity. Angelina Weld Grimke was a very important person in fighting for equal rights for slaves and women. Firstly, Angelina’s childhood and background shaped her opinion on equal rights. Her father, John Grimke, did not educate Angelina because he thought that women were below men. The only education she got was when her brothers would teach her what they learned from school. She was one of the first women to have a lecture in public about antislavery. According to World Books, “They gave antislavery lectures in several Northeastern states and were among the first women to lecture in public in the United States.” She was also a wealthy woman, so it was even more surprising that she was speaking publicly about her opinion. This gained her much attention from the public, which helped her spread the word. She kept fighting for a long time, almost her whole life. According to Women's History, “Weld also sought to persuade her family to abandon slavery, to no avail.” This shows that she really cared about what she was fighting for. She educated slaves on religion and reading, and she was the first woman to speak to the Massachusetts State Legislature on women's equality in 1838. She proved that women can alter the course of political events, and she was very popular in the fight for equality because she had personal experience with slavery and talked about it in detail. She also showed people that limits on women's rights were also in the same system as slavery. She was very wealthy, which gave her an advantage over the people.
