Between the story, "Grendel", and the beliefs of the Anglo Saxon culture, there are many similarities. Such as in the story, there is a setting of a place named, "Herot" which is a mead hall and in the Anglo Saxon culture, mead halls were also present at the time. Although in the poem, the hall is attacked by the beast, it was actually a place where everyone can meet up and be friendly with one another. In Anglo Saxon culture, that is exactly what they are used for.
The perfect hero is someone who fights for people, and vanishes evil with superhuman/God strength to bring the peace and or destruction. Anglo Saxons of these epics are more strict than most in this category, because they are subject for perfection. The cultures in the two cultures take place in different. Medieval literature shows the change of heroes throughout centuries. For the English medieval times, two story’s heroes stand out: Le Morte d'Arthur’s Lancelot and Beowulf’s Beowulf. Lancelot, the patient, humble, and chivalrous knight, is contrasted by Beowulf, a boastful, proud, and rowdy viking. It clearly shows how stories have changed in their depiction of protagonists. Both Beowulf and Lancelot are great warriors and leaders but that is where their similarities end.

When the Anglo-Saxons roamed the lands of current day Great Britain, the definition of a hero relates to how well the individual could conquer a group of people. Throughout the years, Beowulf has been compared to many modern day super heroes. However, the super hero that Beowulf is most easily compared to is Superman. Although there are multiple differences amongst these two characters, there are a few similarities as well. Such similarities exist in appearances, as well as supernatural qualities. Moreover, Beowulf and Superman are both portrayed as heroes for their time.
Compare and Contrast: Heroism When people hear the word “hero,” Thor, X-Men, Captain America, Superman and several others may come to mind. Elizabethan Era vs. Modern Era: Similarities and Differences The Elizabethan era is considered as the Golden age in English history. It is called Elizabethan era because of Queen Elizabeth I and her reign. The era is most famous for theatre, because of plays that broke free of England’s past style of theatre that was composed by William Shakespeare and many others. There are a lot of similarities and differences between this era and the modern era. During the Elizabethan era, women were considered subordinate to men.
A Comparison of Elizabethan England and Modern-Day England The Elizabethan Era is often considered the ‘Golden Age’ or ‘Renaissance’ of English History. It was called Elizabethan simply because it coincided with Queen Elizabeth I’s rule. It was a generation of expansion of ideas and flowering of poetry, music, and literature and it greatly contributed to the theatre field.
An example of one of these is a person who would give their own life to protect another . Classical and modern heroes have their similarities, but they also have their differences. Despite how different they may seem, classical and modern heroes do in fact have some obvious similarities that may be difficult to point out. Both types are incredibly brave.
