According to ASPCA, or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the largest humane society in North America, “Approximately 7.6 million animals are abused each year from households across the United States.” Animal abuse is illegal. Animal abuse can be defined as the intentional infliction of suffering or harm by humans upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law (Wikipedia). Animals offer humans psychological and emotional support, and they provide a reassurance of safety. Dogs and cats, the most common type of household pets, receive the most abuse with neglect being one of the main issues, but many pets are not considered just animals, they are a part of the family. Family is meant to be loved and taken care of in a healthy environment. If people are abusing their family, or pets, they are not in the right state of mind. After the war between Rome and Britain, Rome came out victorious, so, later, Britain began to export dogs for pit fighting against larger animals, like boars, oxen, and bulls etc. Later, in 1835, it became illegal, so they started dog fighting. Dog fighting is defined as two game dogs fighting in a ring or pit for the entertainment of spectators, usually for gambling or dog trafficking (Villavicencio). As people started to recognize the abuse of these dogs, they needed a place where people can bring stray dogs, to prevent dog fighting, so they can be in a safe environment.
