The novella, Animal Farm by George Orwell, published in 1945, is an allegorical and dystopian novella showing the values, attitudes and beliefs of animalism. The novella portrays what propaganda techniques was used to enlighten the readers where the power was and how equality, freedom and unity was gradually demolished by the pigs. Propaganda techniques are loaded words, fear and lesser of two evils were used by the pigs to demolish the views of equality, freedom and unity for social control over the other animals. The pigs intentionally manipulated the value of equality, one of the central values of animalism, for social control over the whole farm. Unity was essential for Animal Farm’s revolution to work. Napoleon firstly destroyed unity by discontinuing all of the of meetings as the animals didn’t come together and untie. Unity was extinguished when Napoleon commanded a meeting where he stood in silence unlit he let out screech which upon, “the dogs bound forward, seizes four of the pigs by the ear and dragged them, squealing with pain and terror, to Napoleon feet” (p. 61) the four pigs confessed to helping Snowball since he was banished. They were slaughtered along with numerous other animals that also assisted snowball or did anything Napoleon disagreed with, this indicated unity being destroyed because one of the commandants was “no animals shall kill any other animal” (p. 35).Unity was entirely ruined when “the animals forced themselves into two factions” over the dispute of the building of the windmill which is, build the windmill and have a potential food shortage and less work in the future or keep farming and have additional food, this is a main example of unity being destroyed as the animals are meant to be united but they has spilt into two factions meaning there is no unity in Animal Farm. Freedom of speech was destroyed the second Napoleon was “leader” because anyone that dared to speak their mind or share their opinion would be met with violence. “they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere” (p. 64) napoleon successfully creates an atmosphere of fear amongst the animals which destroys the value of freedom and gives the pigs the opportunity to manipulate others, destroying their freedom and creating a society more controlled more than under Jones’s rules. Orwell positioned the reader to see how dumbfound and naivety the animals were to what was happening on the farm. Freedom was also torn apart when the pigs made the animal work harder than ever for a better life “all that year the animals worked like slaves but they were happy with their work; they grudged no effort or sacrifice, well aware that everything they did was for the benefit of themselves and those of their kind” (p. 44). The animals were so oblivious to everything that they did not realise they were severing the pigs that were practically humans by that time. The use of ‘loaded words’ had made the animals think they were free “in those days they had been slaves and now they were free, and that make all the difference” (p. 81).
