Although force was used in Animal Farm to get what the pigs wanted, rhetoric was used more often to manipulate the other animals in getting what they wanted. Squealer is the most manipulating pig in Animal Farm, he was also known as the “propaganda minister”. As time progressed the rules began to change Animal Farm.
Animal Farm was written by George Orwell, who wrote the book with rhetorical components. Two of the rhetorical components used in the novella were symbolism and satire. Orwell used symbolism when he named the characters. One example was the pigs because they are usually thought of as disgusting and dirty. Another example used was the sheep because they are thought of as dumb and fearful.
“The pigs’ ear were bleeding, the dogs had tasted blood” This quote from Animal Farm truly shows how much power Napoleon possesses on all of the other unintelligent animals. Napoleon generates a lot of fear on the animals and Squealer uses propaganda on the animals that are too stupid to think for themselves. If the animals were all educated: Napoleon would not be in power, because they would all be fighting for power, would not have been easily manipulated, and They would not be fooled by the change of the seven commandments, however some may think otherwise because Napoleon generates fear through the dogs. The animals would all be fighting for power.

Rulers like Stalin and Trotsky persuaded the people by enticing them, so it would only make sense that Orwell would portray much of that in the book. It was essential for the author to use rhetoric to allow the reader to fully understand the entirety of history and the story.

The quote says that you should not judge someone based on how they look or sound. Hitler said that the Jews were bad for the country, and they would mess everything up, so they needed to go, and everyone followed and believed him.
Persuasion can be the most effective tactic when used efficiently. The book, Animal Farm by George Orwell, uses it very well in the first few pages. When he writes, George Orwell’s overall purpose is to blend political writing that showcases his own ideologies and artistic writing. Animal Farm is the first book where he explicitly does so. It’s an allegory for the Russian Revolution told via a story of farm animals rebelling against humans.
In Animal Farm, George Orwell warns how power will often lead to corruption. Napoleon was placed in a position of power after Major died, and he slowly starts to lavish in his power and become addicted to the lush life of a dictator. When Napoleon first becomes a leader, he expresses how everyone will work equally, but as his reign goes on, he shortens the work hours. At the very end of the novel, the observing animals even start to see that pig and man had become the same. The irony present in the above example, illuminates how regardless of how much a ruler promises to maintain equality and fairness, the position of power that they hold, will corrupt them.
A totalitarian ruling party as defined above that virtually controls all aspects of its citizen’s lives dominates George Orwell’s novels, 1984 and Animal Farm. In these novels, the dangerous effects of a totalitarian society are portrayed through the theft of the mental wellbeing of individuals, halting of the progress of society, and restriction and abuse of the physical rights of citizens. Argument 1: The tyrannous supremacy, which Napoleon and Big Brother’s worshipping party held, robbed the individuals of their mental wellbeing through their deliberate actions to establish ultimate power. A phrase told to people time and time again, which makes it ironic that they didn’t learn the meaning of the phrase the first time, and have to have it told to them again. In Animal Farm, this quote is proven through an allegory of the Russian Revolution. In the story, the animals blindly follow Napoleon and Squealer, and do/believe what they are told. The animals even forget what the farm was like when Mr. Jones was in charge.
“Beasts of England”, “Ode to Napoleon”, the sheep’s chants, revised anthem, “Animal Farm, Animal Farm” are among the most relevant songs mentioned in this allegory. All the animals at the farms sing these songs together at the same time and by commanding this, pigs evoke an atmosphere of grandeur and nobility. The animals on the farm feel satisfied when singing together because it brings them a sense of community, but the animals do not realise that the real purpose of the songs is to keep them focused on the tasks. THE USE OF IRONY AND SATIRE Orwell uses point of view in Animal Farm to create irony. The story is told from the naive point of view of the lower animals.
In Animal Farm, two themes were shown throughout the book. One theme was “Not everyone is equal; some people believe that they are more superior than others.” another theme was “People deserve to have their own thoughts and ideas. These were shown when Napoleon used his powers for hurt hurt not for the better of the farm. He used his powers to create a farm that is not equal for everyone.
