In August 30, 2008, I was admitted in the hospital for Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, which comes from contaminated food or water [Mary Mallon (Typhoid Mary)]. I was hospitalized for almost a month, spent my birthday in the hospital. The doctors ran test on me every day to see if the antibiotics were working or not. While being in the hospital, I did my own research and found out this Typhi is not just among humans, but animals as well. When researchers test animals they mean no harm to species, they want people to benefit from their finding. People are very much closed minded thinking that it is cruel and abusive to research on animals. Animal testing has been going on since 500 BC not just by scientist but philosophers, “Physician-scientists such as Aristotle, Herophilus, and Erasistratus performed the experiments to discover the functions of living organisms” (Richard R. Sharp). Religious beliefs played an important role because the world was based on higher power not on scientist thinking. During the Greek time, people were more concerned about learning about the work rather than being worried about the consequences and rights. Philosopher as well know are very open minded, they knew that great discoveries came with great consequences.
