Animal experimentation has become a highly controversial topic over the years. The usage of animals has consistently been used throughout human history in relation to hunting, clothing, transportation use and more. In addition, Descartes has expressed his interest in the dissection of animals, leading to the common use of vivisection: experiments being done on living animals. These tests are used to assure the safety and effectiveness of merchandise when creating anything from cosmetics to medicine. Furthermore, understanding how our bodies work is a fundamental research aspect in animal experimentation. Before addressing which situations should be permitted for animal experimentation, we need to understand why this issue is so controversial. Why does this topic matter? How does this experimentation affect our lives? Around 50 to 100 million animal experiments take place every year. These procedures occur when humans can largely benefit from the results. For example, you are diagnosed with a condition that has it’s cure due to animal experimentation, or you buy a favourite cosmetic product that is safe to use because of animal research. These real life situations provide insight on why animal experimentation affects our lives. On the other hand, the moral status of animals is a substantial opposition to animal research.
