Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born October 11, 1884, in New York, New York, of the United States (“Eleanor…”). She was the daughter of Elliott Roosevelt and Anna Rebecca Hall, who were both socialites (“Eleanor Roosevelt Biography”). Elliott Roosevelt was plagued by frequent mental illnesses along with alcoholism, and he was entered into a sanitarium when Eleanor was young. (“Eleanor…”). Not long after, when Eleanor was eight years old, her mother died, and she and her brothers went to live with their grandmother, Mary Hall. She was then sheltered from all outside contact, except for family (“Eleanor…”).
Eleanor had been tutored privately until she was fifteen, which was when she was sent to Allenswood Academy (“Eleanor…”). Eleanor Roosevelt was a philanthropist, an author, a world diplomat, and a resolute champion of liberal causes (“Eleanor…”). Because of her husband, she became First Lady of the United States (Biography.com...). This allowed her to give press conferences and to speak out for human rights, children’s causes, and women’s issues (Biography.com…). One of the most important events for her was when Franklin was elected as President of the United States, which was when Eleanor began to be recognized by the public. She spoke and worked for the League of Women Voters, the National Consumers’ League, the Women’s Trade Union League, and the Women’s Division of the New York State Democratic Committee (“Eleanor…”). Like everyone else, Eleanor went through some challenging and also exciting times. One of her most challenging times was when her husband was diagnosed with polio. An exciting time would be when she was able to take over for her husband, traveling around giving speeches. Because of all of this travel, Eleanor met and saw many different faces and people. She won some awards, including the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human
