A big reason why this is; youth in these particular communities are used to growing up with family members making lots of money selling drugs, and see hardworking family members working legitimate jobs barely making ends meet. This really disheartens them from continuing with school as Rodney Phelps says to another young kid in the Juvenile detention system, “…you still a kid, basically, how you going to be making six an hour, when you can be stacking real money, slinging?” (Bergmann 2008, 159). This shows the attitudes of people in the community, which in turn affects the decision making of young men in these families. The drug dealing culture really shapes family life in Detroit by being normalized and seen as a way to make huge amounts of money albeit the risk of incarceration increasing exponentially.
They were drawn into the gang life because people in gangs offered not only protection but a family, and power they wanted. It gives kids a sense of belonging and control over their own life. It is necessary tool to survive that is why many kids join the gangs. Throughout this book he explained that there is no functional system of these kids that have nothing better to do with their time. This affects kid’s way to get to the American
Young people give various reasons for joining gangs. Among the most common reasons are: to belong to a group, protection, earn money, excitement, to be with friends, and it's even a family tradition"(Escondido Police Department). Amongst the various reasons that lead youth
This can lead to child drug dealers or drug addicts as well as fighting to survive at an early age. Children that grow up in the streets tend to gravitate towards the streets. With a lack of strong and conventional support from their families, poor, inner-city youth have no choice but to join the street culture. They are raised with the idea that in order to survive, one must fight for his or her own life, especially when they are taught to fight at a young age. With no one to raise them correctly or show them differently, street culture is all that poor, inner-city black youth
I think the prevailing idea that teenagers were rebellious is correct. When I say this, I’m referring to the 1920’s. Society had a perfect image of how everything should be. Especially adolescents in particular. Adolescents in the 1920’s pretty much got rid of the norms which were expected of them, and created their own.
Teens feel like they have no choices but what there parents, teachers, or other authority figures, tell them. Just like how all the districts had no choice, but to do what the capital says. Teenagers are very rebellious and don’t want to do what authority figures tell them. Modern day teens are very much like the main character of the Hunger Games Katniss. Katniss was always being told by the capital what to do.
As you stated these youth joined a gang to feel accepted and gain the support they were lacking.
There is a number of reasons that range from simple to complex, on why teenagers join gangs, and we can help by finding solutions to their specific problem before they choose to join one. To help someone get out of a gang, we as a society need to show there’s more out there in the world that they could do that will make a positive impact. Teenagers have different reasons to join gangs depending on their life situation. Everyone in the “Greasers” in The Outsiders had different reasons to be part of the gang. “We were used to seeing Johnny banged up-
A new generation brings in a new, different culture. And somehow, it goes from different to rebellious. The adult American society will often look at the youth subculture’s homology: their choice of clothes, music, dance, and their overall lifestyle, and they will just begin to form these “personality conflicts” (O’Connor 412). If adults, more specifically parents, begin to have better understanding of why their subculture is often so different, then they will be able to relate to and raise “better” teenagers. This does not mean that every elder and adult has to embrace youth culture, but there should be an attempt to have a better understanding of it.
Since history teenagers love to stay on top by being popular, cool and also wear clothes that make them look older. In 1920's Americas wealth doubled and this lead to more consumerism. People in jazz clubs where cool and they expressed themselves in a unique way. In todays world being popular and cool do provide the teenagers being valued by other people or they think as they are accepted in the young community. This causes teenagers not being able to find their true selves.
Many teenagers believe that they should be what people want them to be, this is mainly because they believe that society will not accept them. Members of society also judge’s people on what they wear or a person’s appearance, for example people that
In youth generations, teens are more sensitive to things, since they are learning who they are. Family plays a big role in a person’s life; if a person’s upbringing was negative, they’ll most likely have this negative view of the world, though it’s not true for everyone. Youth culture is just as important for young people since this culture is where they learn how to be and how to feel. Like in today’s youth culture, it all revolves around what is trending on the internet and who’s doing what. Lastly, society, which is many times perceived as negative by young people; thanks to songs and media, sometimes they don’t feel like they fit in with the standards that are set by
In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul instructs that “don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character. Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning.” (New International Version) So many young people are drawn into gangs because they are fooled into believing that they are joining a community that will care for them and love them. They may be yearning to belong to a group, especially if they have not had a solid home
Introduction Juvenile delinquency due to gang relation has increased drastically. Many people fail to realize that gangs have a considerable influence on the decisions juveniles are making. Adolescents are easily influenced by the members of the gangs and manipulated to commit certain crimes. As juveniles they are not mentally and emotionally mature to make such critical decisions, which in turn allow gang members to manipulate and control the youth they recruit. Juveniles become a part of gangs for several reasons, including, gaining protection, governmental, and social issues.
One reason is their inexperience and youth. A lot of times being young and having a lack of experience can lead teenagers into dangerous and often criminal situations, such as joining gangs, taking or dealing drugs and drinking. A teen 's discretion isn 't as fully developed as that of an adult. Also, many teenagers lack positive role models in their lives. If a teenager is part of a family that is either setting a bad example (by engaging in criminal activity themselves) or entirely absent, they have no one to show them the correct path in life.
