Setting
The setting takes place in the 21st century, with flashbacks to the 1940's. The setting is not a single place, because they are travelling across the country, over the Atlantic, and eventually ending up in Rome. The cites in the U.S. they stop in are Topeka, New Orleans, and Atlanta on the way to Italy. They also spend time in Southern California for a while, before leaving on their quest. Rome is the last place they go to in this book.

Characterization
The story is told from 4 different perspectives, Percy, Piper, Leo, and Annabeth, who is the main character. Annabeth is the leader of the seven teens chosen to go on the quest that will save Rome. She has blonde hair, gray eyes, and is a child of Athena, which means she's smart, …show more content…

Also, Hera chose them to reunite the gods and the demigods, because Zeus locked all the gods in Olympus. In an attempt to go to the Underworld and close the Doors of Death, an ally and friend of the crew, Nico di Angelo, was kidnapped by the twin giants Ephilates and Otis. The Doors of Death keep the dead... dead, as long as the doors are closed. As long as they are open, Gaea will continue to get stronger, and eventually be resurrected by two sacrifices. So when they got to Rome, there were two things that needed to be done. On on hand, Annabeth is trying to save the Athena Parthenos, the largest statue of Athena ever made. The statue gives Athena her power as a war goddess in her Greek form, but as long as it's still hidden, she's stuck in identity crisis between her Greek and Roman self. At the same time, Percy, Leo, Piper and the others went to find Nico and stop them from destroying Rome. All of this eventually leads up to the defeat of …show more content…

A lot of times in the book, the characters would lose hope, but their friends were there for them when they need them most. The main idea is mostly circled around Gaea, and how she controls most of the things that happen in the book. She can even send spirits called eidolons to possess people on the boat. The idea is that they can find a way to stop Gaea and save the gods and the world.

Personal Comments: A part I like is when Piper uses her charmspeak, a power given to her by her mother Aphrodite, to coax the eidolons out of Percy, Jason, and Leo. Another part I like is when Annabeth tricks the weaver/spider queen Arachne into creating a trap built for herself. The trap is a giant Chinese finger trap that Arachne gets stuck in. The only part I don't like is when Percy and Annabeth fall into the eternal abyss that is Tartarus, the spirit of the underworld, after they reclaim the Athena Parthenos. The worst part is the rest of the crew can't go and save them because they would have to go through the Doors of Death, but from the surface entrance. Worse, Nico came out of the Underworld barely alive, and they could never force him back into Tartarus. So Percy and Annabeth will have to find a way out on the other side on their own... and nobody can save them
