Just like any two authors, Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards have many distinctly different qualities to them, however they also have many similarities. Both of the authors are prominent writers from the Puritan church in Colonial America. Bradstreet wrote many pieces of literature including The Burning of our House, July 10, 1666 and To my Dear and Loving Husband. Edwards wrote many sermons including Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards’s literary pieces are similar due to their religion, but their writing styles varies greatly.

Anne Bradstreet Essay Rough Draft “ Upon the burning of our House, July 10th 1666 ” by Anne Bradstreet has a central topic of God. Anne’s viewpoint on this topic is that God is good and god should be trusted. Anne Bradstreet is introduced as a person who has a strong connection with god in the second paragraph where she states “ And to my god my heart did cry, to strengthen me in my distress, and to leave me succourless”. An inference can be made that she has much faith in god and trusts him because she says “and to my god my heart did cry” which shows that she is calling out to him to help her in her time of need. This is further developed as the poem continues.
In this essay, I will analyze the poem Verses Upon the Burning of Our House (July 10th, 1666) by Anne Bradstreet, a puritan who most critics consider to be America’s first “authentic poet. The poem is based on a true story as Anne’s house really did burn down and illustrates her meditations on this event, the pain she felt after losing her home and the effect it had on her faith. The main theme is Anne’s struggle to not become attached to material things. I will begin by explaining the rhyme, style, and tone of the poem, continue by explaining which literary devices and interesting features we can find and the effect they have on the reader, then I will analyze the poem and finally I will give a brief conclusion. Verses Upon the Burning of Our House is a poem written in couplets in iambic tetrameter scheme which makes the story flow nicely.

And the differences are certainly apparent when comparing the modern expectations to the Puritan’s. The most important difference being that the standards were much stricter and the idea of an ideal Puritan woman was very prevalent in society. Anne Bradstreet was a woman full of love for her family, and for God. Her style of writing is cavalier, and though she writes about different topics, she often mentions God, Heaven, and offers thanks to Him. Even when disastrous things happened to her, she still declared God just and merciful, which is a very admirable display of faith, or it could be seen as incredible ignorance, because why would a loving God allow awful things to happen to her? Nevertheless, she attributes God as good, and has a surprisingly optimistic attitude despite everything she suffers through, like her house burning down, the death of her two grandchildren, and her own possible death every time she gives birth. I think it’s interesting how Bradstreet keeps such a positive, hopeful attitude, even though it probably would have been much easier for her to blame God for all of her problems and become bitter and angry, she has faith in Him, despite everything.
Another portion of the text that is worth analyzing is whether or not the poet is a real person or a generalization about all or most poets. All of the lines in the poem use general text and never label a specific person. What’s interesting about the text is that without the title it would be nearly impossible to distinguish whether or not the person the poem is about is a poet or not.
