The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is a diary written between 1942- 1944 by Anne Frank herself while in hiding in Amsterdam during World War II. Anne writes about the perils of living in the secret annex during the time of the Holocaust. She also struggles with self identity, isolation from others while in hiding where she to grow up so quickly. The diary starts off with Anne receiving a diary for her 13th birthday. In some of her very first entries, she talks about her daily life, school, friends, and boys. When her sister Margot is called to appear before the authorities to be sent away to a concentration camp, they decide to go into hiding. A week later, Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan join them along with their son Peter. A few weeks after, an eighth person joins them, Mr. Dussel, with whom Anne has to share a room with. Anne spends a lot of time reading and expanding her knowledge about politics. She begins to slowly isolate herself from the others in the Annex. Anne Frank is a petite Jewish girl with short dark brown hair. Although she doesn't describe her appearance, there are some photographs of her in the novel. Anne is very curious and nosey; she’s interested in and wants to know everything. At the beginning of the diary, Anne is candid and unreserved. For example, once she undressed in front of both families and never had a filter when she spoke to the others in the Annex. There are a couple of different changes in Anne throughout her diary. She shows a tremendous growth and maturity with her writing. Sometimes its almost hard to remember she was only a teenager. During the time spent in the Annex, the optimistic, full of life and hope Anne Frank very quickly transforms to this despairing young woman with the loss of all hope or desire to continue
