Winston Churchill once said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity, a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity”(http://www.pursuit-of-happiness.org). There have been many tragic events in history, and many people are affected emotionally and physically for the rest of their life because of these events. Jews were treated horribly in WWII and many people didn’t survive, but some people did survive by keeping a positive attitude and not giving up, and people who didn’t survive but kept a positive attitude still inspire many people today with their stories. On Saturday, July 11, 1942, Anne wrote “I don't think I'll ever feel at home in this house, but that doesn't mean I hate it. It's more like being on vacation in some strange pension” (Frank 18). This shows that Anne Frank is thinking of the situation as being on vacation rather than hiding for her life. If Anne Frank wasn’t positive, then I don’t think she would have survived as long as she did because she would’ve gotten sick of hiding and would think there was no point in hiding because she would eventually be caught. You would think that it would be very crowded when you are living in the attic of a building with your family and that if another family came it would be extremely crowded. Nevertheless, Anne Frank looked forward to another family coming, as she said on Saturday, July 11, 1942, “When the Van Daans arrive, we'll be able to build cupboards and other odds and ends out of the wood piled in the attic” (Frank 19). This shows that Anne Frank was looking on the positive side of things so that the situation would be more bearable.
