Summary of “Story Cosmetics” In Annie Leonard’s “The Story of Cosmetics,” she argues that there are dangerous chemicals in the products we use daily. Leonard explains to her audience that the FDA is not checking what is inside the products we use. However, there are new people, “green chemists" who check ingredients of products, in order to make sure that they are healthy and safe. Leonard's primary argument is that our daily used products are not safe enough, and have hazardous impacts on our bodies. Leonard wonders, for instance, how these products such as shampoo gives her dull hair a shinning touch (1). This is how Leonard figures out that there are a lot of toxic chemicals in her own shampoo, and in our daily used products, which give us a deceptive impression, but harmful results. After talking to a scientist, she comes to know that these toxics include: “Sodium Lauretha Sulfate, Tetra sodium EDTA, Methyl” (1). Thus, Leonard states that the current situation should be changed. Annie is thinking what is the solution? Similar to what European governments have done by banning cosmetics companies from using harmful chemicals, she is trying to make U.S government adopt similar procedures . She contends that "European governments have required the removal of many toxic chemicals, and companies have figured out how to comply" (7). Likewise, some parties in United States now do the right thing such as "green chemists" who are trying to make substances safe for our bodies (7). Annie believes people would be comfortable and more confident when the products are labeled honestly and producers make sure no toxics are included in their products (7). Annie thinks, if we want to clear our products, we need to make a regulatory solution that demands taking toxics
