Retrieved from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wcm.1203/full This article presents a comprehensive survey on mobile cloud computing (MCC) which helps readers get an overview by defining what it is, its architecture, and advantages of the new platform, the uses of mobile computing in applications, issues that arise and approaches to address them and future research directions. The Mobile Cloud Computing Forum defines MCC as where both the data storage and processing happen outside of the mobile device. Mobile cloud applications differ from previous applications in that they move the processing and data storage away from the mobile devices and into the cloud, bringing applications and mobile computing to not just smartphone users but a much broader range of mobile subscribers. MCC will overcomes many of the challenges faced by today’s mobile devices relating to battery life, storage, bandwidth, heterogeneity, scalability, availability, and security. Cloud computing provided by cloud providers such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft offer services at a low cost making it attractive to business of all sizes. For large companies, the loss of service as a result of outages would be a major concern, particularly if it impacts their customers and results in substantial loss of sale opportunities and customer dissatisfaction. This is offset by cloud providers guaranteeing availability and failover in the advent of failure. For SMEs, however, it is a question of a trade-off. The rare loss of service for a few hours for many SMEs and educational establishments may not be catastrophic. A survey in this article indicated that many SMEs are thinking of migrating some aspects of their operations to the cloud. This is evidently a manifestation of the perceived advantages and the emerging popularity of this cloud computing. This article highlights some aspects of this uniqueness and also explores some of the concerns that might be preventing some companies from adopting it. Notwithstanding these concerns, it is argued that cloud computing is likely to prove commercially viable for many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) due to its flexibility and pay-as-you-go cost structure, particularly in the current climate of economic difficulties. A case study of a cloud experience by a British SMEs is also presented in this study in order to further highlight the perceived values of cloud computing in terms of cost and efficiency for real small
