Boom! Fire! March! And much loss and pain. After a long and hard fought Civil War one of the most prestigious armies: The Army of the Potomac is disbanded on June 28, 1865(“Army of the Potomac” 1).
While reading Kathryn Walbert’s essay on primary sources I learned many important things. The first thing I learned was that primary sources are anything created for the purpose of studying that was created in historical times. The second thing I learned is that primary sources are important to read about because they are very important keys to what life was like in the past. This is very important because it gives you an in depth understanding of how life was and gives you more information on what you are trying to study. The third thing that I learned was that simply because something is made now from the historical time period doesn’t make that item a primary source.
Brother Against Brother I grew up with a healthy diet of American Civil War History. When I was young, my family took a thorough vacation to Gettysburg. The kids were bought blue and grey kepi hats (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepi#North_American_usage), and fake riffles. I could reenact the 20th Maine’s bayonet charge down Little Round Top (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL-5uyp44WA). And this was all before I was 13 years old.

Union General Irvin McDowell believed his army of 35,000 would be able to defeat Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard’s 20,000, but the Confederates managed to hold him off while reinforcements arrived. Eventually the Confederates retreated upwards to Henry House Hill, where Confederate General Thomas Jackson got his troops ready to meet the Union advance (“Bull Run” 1). By 1 PM, many Union soldiers had been fighting for ten hours in addition to having marched six miles before the battle. Then Confederate backups began to arrive and by 2 PM began a counter attack. However, it ended in confusion because units on both sides shared uniforms of the same color and style.
Major General John Pope lead approximately 62,000 Union soldiers in the Second Battle of Bull Run. On the other side, the Confederates were lead by General Robert E. Lee. Despite having fewer men, the Confederates were ultimately victorious as a result of their superior military strategy and their understanding and use of the local terrain. The Second Battle of Bull Run was greatly impacted by both the resources of the both the Union and the Confederate troops, as well as by the local geography of the battle.
Witness/Narrative: Robert E. Lee Hi there, I’m Robert E. Lee. You might know me by reading your history books in school. I was the General of the Northern Virginia army for The Confederates. The Black Hills War, also known as the Great Sioux War of 1876, was a series of battles fought from 1876 through 1877, between the forces of the United States and their allies (Shoshone, Pawnee, and Crow) and the Sioux (Lakota, Dakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho). Taking place under two presidencies and resulting in hundreds of casualties on both sides, The Black Hills War made great impacts that would continue to affect Natives for generations. The United State’s extensive relationship with the Native Americans has its intricacies to say the least. With the arrival of English settlers at Jamestown in 1607, there were undoubtedly uncertainties amongst the Native people as to whether or not these settlers would resemble the Spanish settlers who
Robert’s authentic portrayal of historical characters doesn’t distract the story from presenting the narrative of Robert Rogers’ life but adds and enhances it by giving historical context and clearly exemplifies the ideas and beliefs of the historical figures of the era such as Benjamin Franklin wanting to break away from Britain and Sir William Johnson’s greed in a fur monopoly in the Great Lakes. “ When this French War Broke out in 1775, I and him went to it,. Right away we picked up some of the young fellers around here that had a knack for slaughtering Indians, and we went right to work doing it. That was the start of Rogers’ Rangers. One company of us was, under that old yeller-bellied windbag Sir William johnson.”
This book was written fifty years ago based of written letters from George Bent during the 1800’s. This was a time when Indian trade and American trade were at a high peak and George Bent encountered multiple interactions with Native Americans within Bent’s Fort. Bent’s written accounts within the period of war from 1863 to 1868 were particularly important because he was an eye witness to first hand accounts and wrote deeply about them to civilization. This book review focuses on, Bent’s significance as an inside view of Cheyenne life and the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864. Life of George Bent: written From his Letters gave an authentic view of what happened, as the Cheyennes, Arapahos, and Sioux saw it.
