Suzanne Nelson General Psychology Dr. Stacey Haynes October 26, 2017 Article Review Purpose- The purpose of the research is what the effect of blogging and social support can have on parents who are caregivers to children who have an eating disorder and are involved in Family Based Treatment (FBT). Method- The Researchers selected five blogs on the website “Families Empowered and Supporting Treatment of Eating Disorders (F.E.A.S.T.)”. They analyzed 138 blog posts from mothers who live in the United States or Canada. The Mothers were involved in FBT with children aged 11-19, four girls and one boy. Meal planning advice, resources to find the best doctors and information on the use and non-use of rewards was shared. It was agreed that a different type of parenting style was necessary to come between the eating disorder and the child, since having a child with an eating disorder requires more supervision and interaction as opposed to a child without one. Discussion- The study only involved a small sample of parents who are using FBT for a child with an eating disorder. Despite this small group, the overview was the same. Having an outlet for their situation, sharing information and positive outcomes as well as the frustration of finding doctors who share similar views with them. Implications- The implications of the results show that when a parent has a child with an eating disorder, the whole family needs to be treated. Parents and caregivers need ongoing support and have needs as well. It can be frustrating and taxing on the whole family. Counselors and psychologists need to work along-side the parents, encourage online communities for reinforcement and see that their needs are being met and
