Annotated Bibliography on Implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Building information modeling (BIM) is a new approach designing and documenting building projects. It is a digital presentation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during the life-cycle of support processes, providing a basis for construction capabilities. It can be an effective design tool and one the most promising developments in architecture, engineering, and construction trades. Developing a schematic model by BIM before construction of any building provides a more careful evaluation of the scheme deciding the building’s functional and sustainable requirements, as it provides not only accurate 2D …show more content…

Arayici, P. Coates, L. Koskela, M. Kagioglou, C. Usher, K. O'Reilly, (2011) , "BIM adoption and implementation for architectural practices", Structural Survey, Vol. 29 Iss: 1, pp.7 – 25 In this research paper, the writers have conducted the importance to adopt and implement BIM in architectural practices since architecture profession is now under pressure from owners to use the BIM system in a project. Execution of BIM includes changing workflow from 2D to 3D, finding skilled employees and integration with other related fields .The aim of this paper is to introduce BIM in architectural practices in the UK. The study was on John Maccalls Architects, Liverpool, where teams were functioning with 2D tools over the past two decades. JMA decided to use BIM to overcome the ineffectiveness and collaborate with other disciplines with active time and thus improving the process and business through technical changes. For methodology, the research was combined between JMA and University of Salford through a KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) in UK where four strategies were determined. Analysis of existing practice at JMA and by the documentation of efficiency achievements new business strategies through BIM technology was introduced among JMA staffs and that approach was evaluated and integrated. The intention of KTP was to improve lean design practice trough BIM adoption. The BIM application has reflected both the technical and socio cultural atmospheres as it provides “learning …show more content…

The writer describes the BIM experience in three portions: the adoption process, defining the costs and concluding by the identification of quantifying the business advantages. DMA decided mainly to adopt BIM as they can develop a single environment without disturbing the previous workflow. DMA understood that the implementation of BIM would help them to grow confidence, particularly for the young talented but less experienced. In this article, the writer recommends that having a small practice, they will face no problem in management systems using BIM. All workspaces at DMA were changed to Autodesk Revit in 2007 and initially DMA started to use the BIM system in residential projects producing only drawings without any association, still they had to switch sometimes into AutoCAD. However, from 2009 DMA started to implement BIM in all their projects. DMA has invested £30,000 a year since 2007 for having experts and at present they have developed in- house manual of BIM for various projects. The firm encourages staffs for micro and macro collaboration as they are having improvement in stakeholder consultancy. The author agrees that using BIM, they can satisfy clients by 3D modelling. Therefore, the writer believes that BIM has contributed in the whole workflow, including progress in quality and quantity at
