Summarizing is an advantage because it helps the reader understand what the author is talking about. Not to mention that the use for summaries is to provide the reader with the content of what the speaker is using.
I need to assess your writing as individuals and the class as a group so I can make adjustments. Assignment Outline Paragraph 1 is a summary. A summary should identify author, article, purpose, and give me an idea of the main points. One of the most challenging aspects of summary is the length. This summary paragraph should be 5-7 sentences.
This chapter served as a guideline for whenever I find myself struggling with writing. I even looked back at it with this assignment because I was feeling insecure as to what I was writing. 1st Body: Whenever I get an essay assignment I begin to stress. I stress so much that my mind is completely useless.
The piece of writing which I felt was unsuccessful for me was the Rhetorical Analysis of an article relating to a topic from our course book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This piece of writing was difficult for me to organize my ideas around. The article that I decided to use for my rhetorical analysis highlighted mass incarceration among African American and the effect of civil liberties being are taken away from these individuals. I had a lot of repetition because many of the examples I used demonstrated more than one type of appeal. I found myself repeating what the purpose of the example was and how it demonstrated proper use of ethos, pathos, and logos.

“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
The author elicits the emotions of his readers through his personal narrations, careful choice of words and phrases among others. Right from the start, the author describes his traumatic experience in English writing class and ways he felt misunderstood in order to emotionally appeal to the audience. He intends to persuade the audience to acquire his position by triggering their emotions of sympathy. In addition, his soft tone has equally earned him pity. Concisely, Bruce Ballenger’s article on the importance of poor writing helps unravel several issues in effective English teaching practice.
This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
In his essay,“Simplicity,” author, William Zinsser reveals a solution to cluttered writing and provides examples as to how “clutter” is detrimental to both the writer and his audience. Zinsser suggests that writers strip their writing down to its “cleanest components” to avoid confusing or losing the interest of their readers. He adopts an instructive tone to aid students and writers on how to eliminate verbose language. In paragraph two, William uses a series of rhetorical questions in order to reel in active readers and contemplate about their ideas as well as connect them back to his own. He begins the paragraph with three rhetorical questions: “Who can understand the viscous language…?”
The style of writing has changed drastically in excess of the past years; each person has their own writing modus operandi that helps to get their point from corner to corner or refer to all that jazz that they are trying to portray. Every author seems to have their own unique way of getting their message to their audience, for instance, they might share personal experiences related to their topic or analysis. Some authors might write about something affected them emotionally and influenced them to act a certain way.
Irvin’s conclusions are that writing has its own format and set of rules that differs with each kind of writing and will be subject to change by the writer. Evaluation: Irvin uses expository writing to state how academic writing is argumentative and has its own set of writing myths. Writing myths can happen to any form of writing using critical thinking skills to address the issue. Irvin states in his article that the intended audience is college students. This reading is effective as the myths can help the reader to understand certain layout for the different parts of
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
My scholarly writing skills before taking this course were at a college entry level. I had not yet developed the habit of making a thorough inquiry of the logic I was using while writing. The information that I had collected was often roughly thrown together resulting in a messy, loosely connected, and often ineffective paper. I was making it more complicated than necessary for my audience to become informed from my writing. My work was missing clarity, organization and a cohesive flow.
Vocabulary is important to the English language, because without sufficient vocabulary students cannot understand others or express their own ideas. Understanding vocabulary knowledge is essential for success in reading. The more vocabulary a student knows the better they will be able to understand the text that they read. According to Colorin Colorado, the average native English speaker enters kindergarten knowing at least 5000 words, on the other hand, the average English language learner may know 5000 words in their native language, but few in English (Vocabulary Development, 2009). It may be surprising at how fast an ELL student will pick up the verbal language so that they can communicate with peers, but as educators we must remember that there is a difference between the vocabulary used between peers and the academic vocabulary need to succeed in class.
In contrast to that, various examples have legitimized the use of first-person pronouns in English academic writing. Also, second person pronouns remarkably demonstrate the presence of informality in any given piece of academic writing. The second person pronouns create much of a conversation than the unintended academic writing (Biber et al. 32).this is ideally because it evokes interactional skills. In some cases, writers may use the second person pronoun with a semantic reference that is wider, concerning people in general.
