Annotated Bibliography: Volcanoes Branley, Franklyn M. Volcanoes. Illustrated by Megan Lloyd. New York, NY: Harper Collins, 2008. This inspiring and beautifully illustrated book of Volcanoes is intended for children between ages five and nine years old. I primary chose this book because of its incredible folk-art pictures. I reason why I chose this book is because is easy to understand the text and the full colorful page photograph. The first half of the book talks about the eruption of a volcano located on a tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat and how this volcano buried the whole villages of rock and ash. The second part of the book discusses the mysterious causes of a volcano. The text of the book is written in short sentence using simple vocabulary that is appropriated for young readers. What I also like about the text of the book is that the author “boldface” words that the children would find difficult to understand and at the end of the book the author provided a glossary in which the children can go and look for the word. The most appealing aspect of this book is that the author arranged nicely together text and picture. In the left side the text in nicely present in large font and in the right side a real picture stand alone. This book caught my attention for its cover, which illustrate a real picture of a volcano erupting. This book starts by describing what happened after an eruption (farms, villages, forest, roads are destroy and animals are killed). Then, the author introduces the story of a volcano located near a town called Pompeii in Italy. How this town was covered of ash and lumps of lava all over the town. Later on, talks about volcanoes under the sea and space, people who study the volcanoes and some of the benefit about volcanoes. Since this book is intended for young readers, the text is large, short paragraphs with more complex sentence, introduces new vocabulary and provides the reader with headings at the top of the pages to introduce new information. The book is some way is separate into chapters. The illustration that the author provides are vivid and realistic that are helpful for children to understand the text. Although, some of the pictures may be difficult to interpret, I would recommend this book because contains information about nonfictional
