In Miles Corwin’s novel, And Still We Rise, his first-person speaker, Anita Moultrie, unfailingly proves how proud she is of her community in South-Central Los Angeles. Corwin published the book in April of 2000...... Moultrie teaches her students in order to let them become proud of becoming part of black community in South-Central. Throughout the novel, Corwin consistently advocates against the brutality of racism in relation to black students in inner-city schools by including Moultrie, a teacher at Crenshaw. Moultrie knows later in life other people will “‘judge them [her students] by the color of their skin’”
In Earle Birney’s descriptive lyric poem “Vancouver Lights” written during the Second World War, a reader is introduced to the poem through a visual panorama of sky, ocean, and city from on top of a mountain. The speaker is expressing his feelings of both celebration for human accomplishment and pessimism for probable doom while over-looking wartime Vancouver on a moonless night. Earle Birney alludes to Greek mythology throughout the poem, but the most prominent and chief allusion is to Prometheus, which is skillfully placed in the last stanza of the poem as it sparks the light to the underlying meaning. Earle Birney’s allusion to the Prometheus myth presents the poem in a way that reinforces the ultimate juxtaposition of lightness and darkness
‘Be Music, Night’ by Kenneth Patchen is an intriguing piece of literary art. A picture is painted of human interaction with Earth immediately. The manner in which humans fall into her beauty and vastness is apparent in even the first lines of Patchen’s poem, but why is this important? “Be music, night, That her sleep may go Where angels have their pale tall choirs” This choir is brought on by our musical mother nature.
David Malouf’s novella, Fly Away Peter, explores the brutality of war through contrasting settings. One of the key themes used by Malouf is the serenity of nature verses the destruction of war. This is shown through the contrast between the brutal, grotesque imagery of the Western Front and the tranquil Estuary in Queensland. To cope with the brutality of war, the characters use separate realities to escape the world around them. This is mainly evident while the main protagonist, Jim, is on the confronting battlefield of the Western Front and uses the peacefulness of nature and his imagination to escape the atrocities going on around him.
The Power Behind “Just Walk on By” In Brent Staples article “Just Walk on By”, Staples shares his thoughts on the way marginalized groups interact. He uses his own experiences as a young African American man to shed light on how people can have implied biases that affect the way they treat other people. Staples does this to demonstrate how society develops preconceived notions in the minds of individuals about marginalized groups, primarily African American men, which are often a flawed representation of the people within these groups. The rhetoric he uses is key to developing an understanding persona and an emotional appeal that exposes the implied biases of people without alienating or offending the audience, to whom-- among others-- he attributes these biases.
You can easily relate “Creep” by Radiohead to Holden Caulfield and his pessimistic attitude towards everything and everybody in the book. Wherever Holden goes, he constantly refers to people as “phonies”, without even speaking a word to them. He is very critical and hold high standards for not only other individuals, but of himself as well. His low self-esteem is quite apparent from all the negative comments he makes throughout the text. In my honest opinion, I think Holden puts others down as a way to make himself feel better about the bad in his own life.
On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction. Poet, Nancy Mercado, worries that one day people will forget that heartbreaking day.
However Ludacris only uses a few poetic devices, they enhance the tone of the song. People who listen carefully or read the lyrics to this song realizes that he is displaying a very serious story of three young girls facing hardship and their struggle to survive. These girls are fed up with the life they are forced to live and feel as if the only solution is to runaway. The ton of “Runaway Love”, is melancholy and dark, an opens eye’s to a problem that most people try to ignore. These girls should be enjoying their childhood but instead they are taking on the roles of an adult.
The lyrics illuminate his communication with himself by using the lines “why’d she go.” Through reflecting on the pretenses of the actions of his significant other, he can prevent this from happening in future relationships and apply it to other aspects of his life. Understanding what/why something is “wrong” or inappropriate to say can all social awareness and emotional intelligence to grow. Allowing him to not only become more successful in romantic relationships but all types of relationships. Writing/recording this song provides audiences with the opportunity to relate as well as learn from McCartney’s mistakes.
In the short story “Red Cranes”, by Jacey Choy, the author describes Mie as a young girl who has big dreams. Choy describes Mie’s feelings about her father hearing some red cranes and was very upset that her father had not woke her up. In the short story “The Firefly Hunt”, by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, the author describes Sachiko as a young girl who is determined to accomplish things no matter what it took. Tanizaki describes Sachiko’s excitement about finding fireflies.
This song shows a young girl who is portrayed as having a dorky nerdy look. Also, it shows a girl that is opposite of her, who is a pretty brunette known by the highschool kids. The “nerdy” girl is in love with a football player, who she believes will never have a chance with, because he is with another girl. “Taylor swift” has a crush on a boy who is blind to see that she really loved her and not the girl he is with who is portrayed as a “popular” Brunette. This is an important aspect to Taylor Swift because she is known to sing love stories that she hears about or experience herself.
Whitney Houston’s iconic acapella opening to the song is what catches her listener’s attention. This is when Whitney begins to build the dynamic of the song after the first chorus, when the song shifts into a stronger and bolder feel. She then begins displaying her uplifting and powerful vocal abilities. Whitney is known in this song for her capability to hold certain notes throughout her performance. Unlike Dolly, who was calm, Whitney is crying out and declaring her love.
In this song, the speaker is portrayed as a man who is hurting from his past relationship and so he tries to figure out what made things change and where they went wrong. Throughout the song the speaker reflects on how he was feeling while they were still together and now that they are apart. The song was written as a message to the antagonist, the woman that the speaker loved, and now, is no longer with; he wants answers and he wants her to know how he feels and just how much she hurt him. The speaker lets us know that the pain he is feeling from this broken love of theirs is internal by stating, “To hear that tears me up inside and to see you cuts me like a knife” (Poison).
Although she does not want to, their is a part of her that wants to be with him and is jealous that he has found another woman to love. This song is giving the audience a lesson that we are all strong and that it is always possible to be happy even when it does not seem like it. Despite how strong she is, she still hurts and speaks to her ex who left her broken hearted. “I heard that you 're settled down, that you found a girl and you’re married now,” they broke up and Adele is having an onerous time getting over him. While he is married and now moved on to new things in his life, “I heard that your dreams came true.”
