In recent news we have seen massive riots following the killings of African American men by caucasian police officers. These all follow after one of the most prominent not guilty verdicts of the 21st century on the Rodney King beating. With these riots we see the words of Teju Cole begin to take life.
Recently the media has been covering stories of the amount of black lives being taken by the police. Statistics have shown that is not the case, that the loss of black lives are due to “black-on-black crime.” In this article, the mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu makes an effect to understand the root of this problem, of why African Americans are killing each other. The problem of race has been a continuous issue in America. New Orleans happens to be one of the top city in America with high rate of murder.
Throughout history, the failure of the government to protect black people from ruthless enforcement officers, forced blacks to act in their own interests. During the 1930s, the National Negro Congress organized massive rallies against police brutality, the Black Panther was created to stem the tide of police abuse, and in the 1970s the Congress of African Peoples sponsored the “Stop Killer Cops” Campaigns (Fitzgerald, 2007). The colossal lie of the late spring has been the Black Lives Matter development. It was established on one deception—that a Ferguson, Mo., cop shot a dark suspect why should attempting surrender—and it is propagated by another: that trigger-upbeat cops are filling our mortuaries with youthful dark men. The fact of the matter is that Michael Brown is dead in light of the fact that he burglarized a comfort store, attacked a formally dressed officer and after that made a move for the officer's firearm. These body cameras protect the truth with all officers. As the victims step on the court what many don’t know is the truth is carried by officers at all times. These will be supporting any court trail’s if other people have videos it does not have a chance to beat the body cameras. The point of these cameras is so that nothing really bad goes wrong and so officers won’t be accused of police brutality. All this is positive for any law enforcement, nobody will be lying about anything.
According to “The Washington Post”, Last year 963 African Americans were shot and killed by police. Ever since the 1960s Africans has been fighting for equality; in the Eric Garner case and Michael Brown, it demonstrated how White police officers abuse and misuse their power towards African Americans. Since the increase of police brutality communities has had marches, rallies, and even the Black Lives Matters movements as a response to show that Polices’ abuse of power is unacceptable. In today 's society, numerous occurrences indicate that minorities are still being oppressed by the lawmakers of society. A few black people feel that the oppression years have passed; however, a vast majority believes that the world is concealing their true intentions of continued oppression. Barack Obama made history by becoming this country’s first black male president. However, we still have a horde of issues to tackle before achieving equality. It breaks my heart to learn of the countless deaths of minorities by police officers without holding them accountable.
