The opposition to the Spanish American war was too little to deter the inevitable American success that came as a direct result of fighting the glorious war. However, there were some American congressmen, political organizations, and other American citizens that did not see eye to eye with the imperialist values that allowed for our triumph as it pertains to this glorious and successful war. The Anti-Imperialist American League which began in 1898 in direct contradiction to the war and included people such as Mark Twain, Grover Cleveland, Samuel Gompers, Jane Addams, and Andrew Carnegie, were opposed to gaining resources and serving prosperity to all along the way. Many of those who simply were resistant to change were not afraid to voice their opinions through items such as Anti-Imperialist manifestos. Such manifestos of course denounced the advancement of prosperity for both, in this case, the Cubans and the Americans as a needless horror. These anti-Imperialists failed to recognize just exactly what our soldiers were fighting for on behalf of this great nation, and thus evidenced a general lack of knowledge as it pertains to the additional freedom and prosperity both sides were …show more content…

Many liberals noted that imperialism directly contradicted the Farewell Address of George Washington and Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence especially. They saw imperialism as a torture method used by America to hold true American values as prisoner.
