Understanding and change were the main themes at an impassioned town hall discussion on Anti-Semitism at the University of Wisconsin.

The town hall took place Tuesday night at Gordon Dining and Events Center. The discussion was planned in response to photos that appeared on the door of a student in Sellery Residence Hall. The photos were of an anti-Semitic nature, and when they went viral, people began to question the university’s response.

The town hall, sponsored by the University, was for the purpose of providing support and “discussing actions that will continue to address intolerance and hate,” according to an email sent to students by the school.

As the discussion began it was clear that many people wanted to share their thoughts. The room was crowded wall to wall. There was a slight nervousness and anticipation as each question was asked and answered. After each person spoke, there was a quiet whispering as if to agree or disagree. Some people decided to speak more than others, and occasionally began arguing with each other. Most of the crowd just observed. The administrators who were moderating the discussion began the evening with some opening words. Additionally, they made sure to explain the timeline of events so that everybody had the facts correct.
