Anxiety disorders affect 18.1% of Americans and are becoming more and more common in society. There are new ways that people are raising awareness of anxiety disorders, and one way is in the form of movies. One anxiety disorder can be seen in the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Rowling & Yates, 2016). The movie’s main character, Newt Scamander, appears to suffer from social anxiety disorder. This can be seen in the way he acts in social situations and through his nervous tics.

The first habit Newt shows is how he stays by the walls. This can be seen when he is at a dinner party at the Goldstein’s house, and even when he is sitting at the table, he sits further back from the rest of them. When he goes to a bar to find one of his missing creatures, he chooses to sit at a corner table. The second habit Newt shows is his lack of initiating conversation or adding to a conversation. Throughout the movie, Newt only speaks when he is directly spoken to, except for when he is in his suitcase. The third habit he shows is how he takes the first opportunity he can to leave social settings. In one scene, he is called out among a crowd and then leaves without warning when he sees his creature. At another point in the movie, he is sitting at a table and says, this is the first time he speaks at dinner by the way, that he needs to go to sleep and then leaves the table. The next habit he shows how much he speaks when in different settings. Throughout the movie, Newt often stays quiet when he is around other people, but when he is in his suitcase he speaks more than he has ever done before with people. Newt is in a comfortable environment and he is only with one person, a man named Jacob Kowalski, to whom he speaks with fairly normally. After Jacob seems to find the creatures awe-inspiring, Newt really begins to seem more comfortable
