Are Libraries outdated?
Technology has become a dominating factor in our society. It has replaced things left and right and that includes the need for libraries. Many people believe that libraries have become a place of wasted space due to being replaced by e-books, and the use of google. Children rather than going to the library and picking out their weekly book just read a book on their kindle.While this does remain true, libraries still remain a vital and necessary part of society. Serving their communities, they provide opportunities and activities for all ages. They range from junior volunteer programs, babies and books, cultural center senior visits, writer groups, film series, nursing home visits, family dance party, microsoft excel, library ebooks for kindle, environmental club, and so much more(Calendar of events Orland Park Public Library). Not many places still exist in our society that provide all of these opportunities for its communities. They have and will continue to serve us beyond books. Beyond people's impressions, going to the library isn't just checking out a book, it's a valuable experience that the internet cannot provide for people. Although technology can replace paper backs with e-books, it cannot replace the opportunities libraries have and continue to provide to everyone in their communities. For many they are reliant on libraries to use technology will is crucial in a society where technology is needed for everyday survival. Libraries then become especially important in low income areas as well as culturally diverse communities where the access to technology is less available for them. Removing this resource for them is detrimental to their life, it's removing their access to their survival.
