Throughout history, the Black Death, or the Bubonic Plague, has been revered as one of the most horrific, disturbing, devastating epidemics of all time. The disease involves fever, headaches, chills, fatigue, delirium, and swollen lymph nodes called buboes. Many odd remedies and preventatives were invented during this time, all of which were fruitless. Today, the Bubonic Plague, a bacterial disease, can be easily cured and treated using modern medicine. During the Middle Ages, there was no successful treatment. This plague decimated Europe during the Middle Ages. However, there are some contributions to this downfall that aren’t as well known. For example, “the Jews were burnt all the way from the Mediterranean into Germany. they tortured a number of Jews in Berne and Zofingen [Switzerland].” (Document 8). Perhaps the most awful part of the Jewish persecution during the spread of the Bubonic Plague was the reasoning behind their blame. The Jewish people during Feudal Europe were quite wealthy. Along with this, the Feudal Lords owed the Jews money. When people were looking for something to blame for the disease, the Lords targeted the Jews to avoid paying their debts. For instance, “The council, however, took the cash that the Jews possessed and divided it among the working-men proportionally.” (Document 8). This horrible system of false inculpation, along with the robbery of the Jewish people, further devastated Europe. Innocents were burned, the economy was tarnished, and throughout all of this, the plague continued to spread.
