However, with the way the conditions were for these slaves, it may be the last place they ever see. In the text it states,”The height sometimes between decks was only eighteen inches,so the unfortunate beings could not turn round of even on their sides” (Doc. 6). After reading this, it was obvious that the enslaved people would be mentally unstable because of their lack of air and space. These conditions are only for slaves that obey. The torment that would happen to slaves that disobeyed is much greater. In the text it said,” There have been instances of slitting of ears, breaking of limbs, amputation, beat out of eyes, and castration.” (Doc. 7). In today's world any of these things done to any person of color would cause their abuser to be rightfully shunned. However, it was perfectly okay in and years to come. When people died, men would throw them overboard (Doc. 4) It was called the Bridge of Bones because so many people were thrown overboard. It was also rumored that sharks would follow the ships because so many people were thrown overboard. Those who were strong enough would make it to America only to be broken down
