The Renaissance movement was characterized in literature, art, and thought in many ways. It served as the evolutionary bridge between Europe’s Middle Ages and the modern world. The Renaissance is also noted for some of history’s greatest minds, philosophers, artists, and writers.
The Renaissance movement was characterized in literature. During the middle ages, books were very expensive because manuscripts had to be copied by hand in Latin, making the process long and ineffective. The introduction of the printing press during the 15th century made books significantly cheaper and much easier to produce. This also allowed books to be translated into multiple languages. Art reached new heights during the Renaissance. Many new techniques and styles emerged such as perspective, chiaroscuro, and sfumato. Before the Renaissance, artists focused primarily on religious scenes and Gothic art. During the Renaissance, artists began to focus more on realism and human qualities. Renaissance artists also began to lean towards Roman and Greek styles/ideas for inspiration. “ Finding… Gothic art of the Middle Ages uncongenial to their taste, they turned for inspiration to the civilization of Roman and Greek antiquity…”(Document 10). Additionally, the Renaissance brought about some of the greatest artists in history such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Their artwork was in high demand during the Renaissance. For example, Isabella D’este wrote a letter to Leonardo da Vinci which stated,” Hearing that you are settled in Florence, we have begun to hope that our cherished desire to obtain a work by your hand might at length be realized…. The Renaissance brought a revival of interest in classic Greek and Roman cultures. At the same time, people began to look at life in a more secular way. Because of Humanism, people began to care more about individual human experiences on Earth rather than the afterlife. “One may expect to enjoy that other more radiant glory in heaven, when we shall have there arrived, and when one will have no more care or wish for the glory of earth. Therefore, as I think, it is in the true order that mortal men should first care for mortal things...”(Document 9). Humanism also led to a new understanding of the universe. Because of this, people began to study the movement of the stars (astronomy) in order to build a more accurate picture of the universe. The Renaissance also brought awareness to woman’s rights and privileges. During the Middle Ages, people opposed of educating woman. During the Renaissance, many people began to support the idea that woman should be able to have the same rights as men. “I am amazed by the opinion of some men who claim that they do not want their daughters, wives, or kinswoman to be educated because their mores [morals] would be ruined as a result… Here you can clearly see that not all opinions of men are based on reason and that these men are wrong”(Document
