Europe is a relatively small continent that encompasses a large collection of countries. The large diversity of these countries means that, by definition, there is also a wide, and perhaps varying view of its future direction. Through limiting these ideals in to smaller common subcategories a general view of European ambitions emerges. This therefore leads to the demand for inspiring European stories that represent these people’s shared aspirations. The examination of two films provided a European story about ideals, that reflected the people of Europe’s aspirations. This was achieved through the analysis of two text, first – Three Colours: Blue , and Second – Kolya . These films show that ideals, such as freedom, peace, diversity, and solidarity have a direct reflection in the aspirations of the people of Europe.

Whether the events restricting freedom are positive or negative it has no direct importance in achieving the finial outcome, but rather the manner in which they are dealt with will be the deciding factor. For example, on the national level, past wars/ conflicts may influence freedom through restriction of trade or travel . This dilemma is addressed in the film Three Colours: Blue with the protagonist Julie transitioning from a state of refusal to acceptance. At first Julie tries to ignore her past, which leads to of false impression of freedom. Superficially Julie appears to have obtained freedom, and in a sense it could be argued that she had. However, through analysing her actions and choices it is clear that this is only an illusion and she is, in fact, controlled entirely by her past. Only upon the confrontation with her past is she able to move into acceptance and begin to build a new life .
