My strong interest in human geography stemmed from studying the subject from GCSE to A – level, I have gained a deeper understanding of global issues such as climate change, migration and extreme sex ratios and how these issues have social, economic, environmental and political impacts which can vary from a regional to international scale.
I have witnessed some of these impacts first hand relating to climate change, I visit the French Alps on an annual basis and each year I see the increasing effect of climate change with increasing snow melt and accelerating glacier retreat. ___________________________________________________________________________
I would relish the opportunity to study geographical concepts and theories and then conduct fieldwork where these theories can be tested, evaluated and analysed. I recently carried out an investigation based upon the differing levels of rurality of settlements with increasing distance from the Central Business District, initially based upon Cloke’s index of rurality. From wider reading of Newspapers and the analysis of News broadcasts, it is evident that Europe is not coping with the large influx of refugee and asylum seekers. Especially the UK, a relatively unreceptive economy and with Britain’s decision to leave the European Union due to a promise of better border control it is yet unknown what impact this will have upon asylum seekers and refugees. Hopefully in higher education, I will be able to analyse the solutions this global crisis as well as the others that occurs. I believe a geography degree will provide me with the skills needed to be able to present possible solutions to global
