Propaganda has been used throughout history to promote various political causes and points of views, whether they were corrupt or not. Propaganda is still used everywhere today for the same reasons to manipulate people from all walks of life. These reasons range from convincing people to purchase a product to convincing them to vote for certain political candidates. One historical example of the use of propaganda is in the election of 1828 in which negative campaigning was used by Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. Mudslinging, attempts to ruin an opponent’s reputation with insults, was the main propaganda technique used by both of the candidates’ parties. There are different techniques all companies use to target specific people into purchasing their products. Some of the different types are: glittering generalities, testimonial, name calling, plain folks, transfer, and card-stacking. Testimonial propaganda is when a famous and/or important figure endorses a product. This particular technique is often used by many companies to convince the many fans of the celebrity they are using to get their hands on whatever product they are advertising. This technique usually works because fans think that if their idol is using a product, they should be using it too. One example that demonstrates this idea is a Speedo ad featuring Michael Phelps. The quote on that specific advertisement says “Worn by champions. My speedo.” This testimonial propaganda ad appeals to and targets ambitious athletes, specifically swimmers.
