Cheyenne Szedon (Chapter 1) Structuralism, psychoanalysis, and behaviorism were all different approaches to studying, understanding, or solving mental health issues. Structuralism was used to break down experiences into smaller simpler elements. Introspection is self-observation of our mental and emotional processes. Structuralism uses this to provide reports of our own experiences. Wilhelm Wundt was the first to establish a psychology lab in which this form of psychology was studied as a science. This lab was created in 1879 at the University of Leipzing. One of his students then went to America and created the first lab of psychology at Cornell University in 1892. This student’s name was Edward Tichener. Behaviorism was created suddenly and quite dramatically in 1913 by a man named John Watson. This approach was to study behavior that emphasizes the relationships between environmental events and someone’s behavior. John Watson had said “we are the sum of our experiences.” He didn’t believe in introspection being a possibility. It is impossible to study your own mind objectively. He then decided that psychoanalysis cannot be tested in a lab. This resulted from catharsis. Catharsis, or the “talking cure” as it came to be known, was developed because of this approach. Although Freud had some questionable methods, psychoanalysis is still practiced with some variation to this day. These approaches stated above had significant impact on today’s scientific study of psychology, regardless of
