1.) The life of slaves in the 1700 could be easy, or hard, depending on their “master.” Some slaves worked on farms and performed extremely hard feats of work, but others would do house work for their master that was not as hard but more time consuming. Now these slaves were like servants, but they are considered property, unlike a servant that is a free person. Since slaves were considered property their master could do anything they to them, like branding them just for not doing as told. They started to grow, then died, like her relationship with her sister. Another plant metaphor is when the mayor compared the rebels to vines. When he said this he explained that to kill vines you have to cut them at their roots. The roots in these comparisons is Mr. Washington the lead commander of the rebels.
3.) Isabel’s momma and Queen Esther are her role models because they would both hold their ground on things they believed in even if men disagreed. Fear everyone has fears,but not all have courage. Courage is when you face your fears. Isabel has lots of courage, because she faces almost all of her fears and walks away making them fear her. As the novel progresses, she becomes for defiant and less devoted to her work because she now has the courage to stand up to her fears. 4.) In this point in time freedom had many meanings in fact, everyone had their own definition. Mr. Lockton’s view still had the kind above all but he could do as he pleased. They are betrayed by Colonel Regan because he will not be able to grant their freedom. Isabel reziles this when the rebels have to surrender to the redcoats. In the end of the book Curzon need Isabel because is caught and put in jail, where she sneaks food and clothing to him.
6.)When she passes the woman singing “Yankee Doodle” it is a message that here is someone else around the corner. The code word “ad astra” is appropriate because the colonies are represented by stars. This code word foreshadows Isabel and Curzon escape because they use the stars as a sense of direction.
7.) When the mayor says “The beast has grown too large” he is talking about the rebellion. The people of America are finally seeing the they have a chance to win the war and are gaining self-confidence. So to stop the ‘beast’ the mayor says to will the “beast” by cut off its head” and who is the head? George Washington himself!!!! Now Lockton shy away from this idea because if the rebels heard a word about killing Washington they would be hunted down and
