Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies.
The motives for settling in New England were mostly religious, and settling in the Chesapeake area was for commercial use and profits. Mostly men, servants, and slaves settled the Chesapeake region, while family units primarily made up the New England settlements. The House of Burgesses and the planter aristocracy held most of the power in the Chesepeake area; in New England there was a religious hierarchy, and town meetings.
