My project is a book that contains all of Morris's aphorisms that I could find in the book Tuesdays with Morrie. I tried to relate my own life to the aphorisms that I found. I tried to find pictures that relate to the book and the aphorisms. Then I put the pictures with the aphorisms and decorated it with other things i used as decorations. This whole project helped me understand the book better.
Although they lead different lifestyles, Anne Bradstreet and Phillis Wheatley both deal differently with death in Before the Birth of One of Her Children and To a Gentleman… the latter in a way that is more optimistic than the former. Many similarities are present throughout the writings of the two poets when it comes to the way they speak of death and how to cope with it. Both poets acknowledge their christian beliefs in saying that God holds all power when it comes to death and we, humans, are powerless in that domain. When talking about the fragile subject of death, Bradstreet says, “No ties so strong, no friends so dear and sweet,/ But with death’s parting blow is sure to meet./ The sentence past is most irrevocable,/
Dierdre Sullivan discusses the truthful advice her father gave and that she's lived by ever since. Funerals may be the last place we want to be on a sunny Saturday afternoon, but regardless of its inconvenience we should attend. This powerful message given by Sullivan’s father illustrates the importance of small gestures, not for yourself, but for the good of those around you. Sullivan, 16 at the time her father delivered this powerful message to her, was the least bit thrilled. Sullivan was on her way to fifth-grade math teachers funeral when her dad decided it was best for her to experience the funeral alone.
However, Mr. Schwartz did not die in sadness or with any regrets. Morrie taught humans “how to die”. Schwartz was a professor at Brandeis University. Morrie had a favorite student, Mitch Albom. Although graduation sets both men apart for years, upon hearing of Morrie’s fatal illness, ALS, Mitch rushes back to Massachusetts to see his old friend.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands at a moment of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” -MLK. A Lesson Before Dying is based in a modest community in the south. Written in 1993 but set right after WW2, A Lesson Before Dying promptly displays the prejudice and discrimination that many people faced during the 1940s. Through his writing, Ernest J. Gaines demonstrates the challenges and struggles of being successful, back in a time where many black men were brought down to the level of an animal.
Morrie’s Life Lessons Work, that is one thing that there is no shortage of in Tuesdays with Morrie. In the novel, Tuesdays with Morrie, one recurring theme is learning to live each day to its fullest. Mitch Albom, the narrator, chooses his career over his social life. He often takes things for granted, like Morrie did back in the day. Morrie wants to fix that for Mitch so he doesn’t do the same because he learned how not to take life for granted: “We think we don 't deserve love, we think if we let it in we 'll become too soft” (Albom, 1997).
Milly suffered from a very harmful disease that weakened her and allowed her not to complete specific functions such as swallowing food or water. The Parkinson disease eventually led to death by starvation. Death is an unavoidable experience that every living organism has to deal with. The essay by Linda Bowls allows one to explore the value of death. When death comes for Christians, there is a sense of eternal hope.
Which is why, when Mr.Darcy says “‘She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me (ch.3 pg.15),” we are able to see how people with an ample amount of money stand high above others. This quote was when Elizabeth overheard Mr. Darcy and Mr.Bingley speaking to each other at the ball. At this time, people who significantly had more money than others would be treated a very differently compared to other people. As we can see in the quote, Mr. Darcy feels that he is better than everyone else at the ball because of how rich he seems to be. Families during this time period, would also be divided differently than modern day.
In Tuesday’s with Morrie, Morrie tells a lot of aphorisms that give messages according to life and can be applied to concepts of daily life. “Accept what you are able to do and not what you are not able to do” (p. 18) this is one of many Morrie’s aphorisms and anybody can apply this not just one person, but it takes determination and self-confidence to be successful in life and these aphorisms can help guide anybody through life, including my own. “Accept the past, without denying it or discarding it.” (p.18) Actions from the past could disrupt daily life even the future, but should not be bothered by it and grow from it and create a better future.
For my project of I did a timeline of Morrie's aphorisms. For each Tuesday Mitch visited Morrie I wrote about two aphorisms said on that Tuesday. I ordered the aphorisms from my favorite to my least favorite. All of aphorisms where wisdom, but some the wisdom didn't apply to me so that is why they where my least favorite. I chose the color black because I wanted to show that I mourn for Morrie.
Thornton Wilder expresses this idea throughout his play. “You're twenty-one or twenty-two and you make some decisions; then whisssh! you're seventy: you've been a lawyer for fifty years, and that white-haired lady at your side has eaten over fifty thousand meals with you” (Wilder 62). Life goes by quickly, yet most people do not stop and acknowledge the simple moments in their daily lives. It is only through the forthcoming of death that one realizes the transience of life.
Tuesdays with Morrie, written by Mitch Albom is a story of the love between a man and his college professor, Morrie Schwartz. This true story captures the compassion and wisdom of a man who only knew good in his heart. A man who lived his life to the fullest up until the very last breath of his happily fulfilled life. It is a story of a special bond of friendship that was lost for many years, but never forgotten and simply picked up again at a crucial time of both Morrie s and Mitch s lives.
One of the most important aphorism that I remember and live by is one that my mom told me “es mejor estar solo que mal acompañado” which translated in English means that “it is better to be alone than have bad company”. This aphorism goes back to a verse in the bible from Mateo 5:30 “Y si tu mano derecha te es ocasión de caer, córtala, y échala de ti; pues mejor te es mejor que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y que todo tu cuerpo sea echado al infierno”. In English, Matthew 5:30 states, “If your right hand makes you stumble and leads you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; for it is better to lose one of the parts to your body than for your whole body to go into hell”. When I was 10 my Grandmother was nearing the end of her battle with cancer, it had gotten so bad that us grandchildren could no longer see her. So, when Morrie said, “Death ends a life, not a relationship.”, meant a lot because it is true. I am not religious but I know that someone can always be with you, whether dead or alive. It took my until I was about 7 years old to actually now that people died. Having that child view of the world, I didn't know death even existed.
Tuesdays With Morrie is a heart wrenching philosophical movie about a rekindled relationship between a former student Mitch Albom and his college professor Morrie Schwartz, who’s dying from ALS. Every Tuesday, Mitch visits his college professor and learns a valuable lesson on some of the most complex problems life has to offer such as dependency and fear.
