There were two crewed Apollo missions that orbited the Earth. The two Apollos were 8 and 9. Apollo 7 launched on October 11, 1968, and was the first crewed Apollo spaceflight. The Apollo 7 made it’s splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean on October 22, 1968, eleven days after launch. The crew consisted of Walter Schirra (Mission Commander), Don Eisele (Command Module Pilot), and Walter Cunningham (Lunar Module Pilot). The objectives of this mission were to demonstrate the command and service module and crew performance, space vehicle and mission support facilities performance, and the command and service module rendezvous capability. “Apollo 7 spent more time in space than all the Soviet space flights combined up to that time.” Apollo 9 was …show more content…

This was the first mission that put men in lunar orbit. This mission’s crew was Frank Borman, William Anders, and Jim Lovell. Three days into the trip, Frank Borman made a statement about what he was seeing and the statement was “It’s a vast, lonely, forbidding-type existence- great expanse of nothing.” Apollo 8 got NASA one step closer to landing on the moon. Apollo 10 was launched on May 18, 1969, and was also a lunar orbit and return. It returned to Earth on May 26, 1969, eight days after it’s launch. “The purpose of the mission was to confirm all aspects of the lunar landing mission exactly as it would be performed, except for …show more content…

Apollo 11 was the first mission to land on the moon. launched on July 16, 1969, landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and returned back to Earth on July 24, 1969. This was a major event for not only NASA and the President, but also for the entire country. This provided so much hope to America and achieved President Kennedy’s goal of reaching the moon before the end of the decade- narrowly making it by five months. Two of the three crew members are well known today. The crew was Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. Armstrong and Aldrin were the first two astronauts to touch the moon; Collins stayed up in the Command Module and orbit the moon. When Armstrong descended the ladder and became the first man on the moon, he gave his famous quote, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Each Apollo after the this had the same goals: perform a survey of the area and collect samples, deploy a number of experiments, develop techniques for point landing capability, further develop the capability to work in the lunar environment, and obtain photographs of candidate exploration sites. Apollo 12 launched on November 14, 1969, landed on the moon on November
