The book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park explores the life of Salva, an 11-year-old boy living in South Sudan, after he is displaced by the Sudanese Civil War. First, in 1985, Salva and his classmates are instructed to run into the bush to escape the gunfire that was heard not far from the school. Then, he joins a group of travelers who are walking away from the war in Sudan, but they abandon him in a barn one evening while he is still asleep. After spending a few days with the barn's owner, Salva is sent away with a different group of travelers, must of whom accept him grudgingly. The group walks for a month toward Ethiopia, and eventually they arrive to the Itang refugee camp in Ethiopia.

In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.

Economics and Psychology in Appalachia, An Analysis of the Novel: Above the Waterfall In the novel Above the Waterfall, Ron Rash decides to focus on the main theme of Loss. The culture within the beautiful ecosystem of Appalachia is encased with family ties that are hard to deny. Rash writes, “In a county this rural, everyone’s connected, if not by blood, then in some other way” from the relationship between Darby and Gerald to the friendship between Les and Becky, their relationships show a true loyalty to the ones they have grown up with and show that Appalachia is a tight knit community (Rash 90). The characters within the novel: Above the Waterfall demonstrate signs of loss of self, domestic violence, as well as poverty.
Rocket Boys is a memoir by Homer Hickam Jr. (Sonny), and it’s about his journey to become a rocket engineer for NASA, and how he fought against the norms his town of Coalwood had. He fights the discouragement of his dad and cycles through many different types of motivations. The main theme of this book, Rockets, is the perfect theme for Rocket Boys for many different reasons. Rockets are a perfect theme for Rocket Boys because they are a symbol of aspiration and escape, they act as the embodiment of learning and innovation, and they represent community transformation. Rockets in Rocket Boys symbolize many things, but especially the aspiration of the main characters, Sonny and his rocket launching agency (the BCMA), and their escape from the norms of the town of Coalwood.
Oftentimes when reading texts about liberation, whether the liberation is physical, metaphorical, or otherwise, there is a tendency to expect an overcoming narrative of sorts. Namely, when presented with a figure that is suffering, an audience expects a clean ending. However, concerning memoirs, this isn’t always the case. If anything, overcoming narratives within autobiographical texts can flatten out the nuances and struggles that are presented within, making the arc of the text seem flat and unconvincing. This is far from the case with Jimmy Santiago Baca’s autobiography, A Place to Stand.
In the novel, The Rock and The River by Kekla Magoon, three different characters, Roland, Stick and Sam have different approaches to the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. Sam feels overwhelmed by his father and brother's different political views. The author demonstrates that multiple approaches are necessary in the quest for equality and civil rights as Sam thinks about choosing his father's path as non-violent protest or his brother's path as he is in the black panther group. The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Ever since the American government first interfered in the Native American way of life, they have had complete control. This control was no freely given to them, but instead they forcefully took it and created a situation where the Native Americans became solely dependent on the American government simply to survive. Sherman Alexie exemplifies this dependence throughout his novel, Reservation Blues, particularly through the character of Thomas Builds-the-Fire. In his journal Thomas Builds-the-Fire writes down The Reservation’s Ten Commandments as Given by the United States of America to the Spokane Indians”, the most notable being number four: “Remember the first of each month by keeping it holy. The rest of the month you shall go hungry, but the first day of each month is a tribute to me, and you shall receive welfare checks and commodity food in exchanged for your continued dependence” (Alexie 154).
As I read many of the essay in This I Believe edited by Jay Allison I felt like many of them related to my life, some more than others. Out of the many essays in This I Believe my favorite is “Remembering All the Boys” by Elvia Bautista. This is my favorite essay because her and I share many of the same beliefs and views on treating people with kindness and compassion no matter what wrong they’ve done to you or your family, which are core values my family instilled in me at a young age. At one point in her essay she says, “My brother was sixteen when he was shot by someone who liked red, who killed him because he liked blue”(17). A few lines later she says “And we will go together and bring a big bunch of flowers enough for both of these
The Odyssey and the poem about regret have similar and different views and meanings of regret. The Odyssey is a story about a man named Odysseus and him on a journey on the way home. This story is called an epic poem in literature. The poem is about someone who is regretting not spending time with a deceased friend but in the end realizes that it is ok because he knows that he will see him again when he passes away.
