The work in Project Mercury, the Gemini Program and the Apollo missions was much more complex and significant than many think. All the missions played such an important role in reaching the moon. By the completion of the first lunar landing mission, American astronauts already logged more than 5,000 man-hours in space.
The ultimate victory that the United States took was the very first landing on the moon that included three people, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, during the Apollo 11 mission. Both the launch of the Sputnik and Apollo 11 led to more advanced technology developments.
That Apollo 8 flight, I think was the most important flight of this program. ‘It was the first time men had left the confines of the earth, the first time that they were captured by another body and this was the first real exploration into space,’ said Jim Lovel. The Apollo 8 Mission was launched at Cape Kennedy on December 21, 1968. The astronauts that were launched into space were Frank Borman, Jim Lovel, and Bill Anders.
The Apollo 16 mission was the 16th lunar mission. It launched from the Kennedy Space Center on April 16, 1972. The crew included Charles M. Duke Jr., John W. Young, and Thomas K. Mattingly II. Once on the moon, the crew was the first to use the lunar roving vehicle (LRV) to cover greater distances than could be achieved by walking. They made visits to Spook Crater, Cinco Craters, and North Ray Crater, among other locations.
The Apollo Space Program also known as “Project Apollo” was the third United States human Spacecraft that successfully accomplished the task of landing a man on the moon. All together there were fifteen manned flights of the spacecraft from the years 1968-1975. Prior to the manned missions into space, the team used the Apollo command and service module to test the safety of the aircraft. It successfully completed four trips to space. Safety became a huge issue after Apollo 1 (a ground test) killed astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffe due to a fire.
On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:22am in search for another human landing on the moon. The Module was 363 foot tall and is the second mission to land humans on the moon for the United States and is also known as the “Pinpoint” mission. The first mission in which humans walked on the moon was Apollo 11 that occurred just a few months prior. The main purpose of this mission was to bring back information and photos for future missions down the road. Apollo 12 landed on the moon on the 19th and was directly on the Ocean of Storms.
He then went on Apollo 11 took off to space not know that it would change the world and be a historical moment within the world. There was two other men that went on the mission with Neil Armstrong and they were Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin Jr “Buzz”. “An estimated 530 million people watched Armstrong's televised image and heard his voice describe the event as he took "...one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" on July 20, 1969.” (NASA). They spent a little over 21 hours on the moon surface.
How could they safely land on the moon and bring them home safely? The significance of the mission would prove that America was up for the challenge of continuing its explorations with success. Many people were part of the other Apollo missions, a stepping stone to the much bigger mission of landing on the moon. The first Apollo missions did orbiting
Apollo seven was the first flight with a crew. They had to orbit the earth and demonstrate multiple photograph and medical experiments during the flight(Williams). Apollo eight, nine, and ten were all used to test the crew and make sure everyone and everything was capable of handling the missions(Loff). Apollo eleven was the first mission to actually land on the moon and have mankind step foot on the moon. It was a successful flight to the moon and also back to the earth.

After completion of the Apollo project, NASA is now in a transition as it looks for a new project to replace Apollo. There exist a need for the public to be informed of NASA’s aim and expectation, so as to provide informed consultation (Learry, 1990). As a matter of public policy, society also ought to be aware of the workings of NASA so as to continually check on the agency’s future expenditure and expectations (Committee on Meeting the Workforce Needs for the National Vision for Space Exploration, Space Studies Board, Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, National Research Council, 2006). New program will ultimately have to meet the economic realities of today. As such the public has to look at whether the benefits gained from the Apollo vis-à-vis the cost.
Space Exploration: Apollo Missions Project Apollo and the Apollo Missions were a culmination of years of work, thousands of man-hours, and a commitment to President John F. Kennedy’s push for space exploration and the endeavor to be willing to face challenges and succeed. The men and women involved were dedicated to advancing our understanding of science and developing the necessary technology to reach the Moon. They strived for greatness, excellence, and brilliantly succeeded beyond what most thought was possible. The main goal of Project Apollo was to land “Americans on the moon and return them safely to the Earth.”
