Have you ever lost who you are in life? The chaos and business of life can consume a person in society. Lying appeals to more people than telling the truth when trouble arises. In The Crucible, John Proctor, Giles Corey, and Rebecca Nurse stay honest to themselves no matter how hard life gets. John Proctor gets lost in society and find his way back to being himself. First, John has an affair with Abigail and discovers that it was a mistake. He ends the relationship with Abigail by saying, “no, no, Abby. That’s done with...put it out of mind Abby,” (p 1045) and fixes the relationship with his wife, Elizabeth. As Elizabeth convinces John to lie for his life, he says, “I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me!” (p 1117) John is declaring that he will lie for his life unlike his honest friends. Giles is a man who keeps his word. After his wife is put in jail and dies, he wants to help John Proctor get Elizabeth out of trouble. He goes to court with a petition to get her out and the court asks for names of the people who signed it and he says, “You know well why not! He’ll lay in jail if I give his name.” (p 1090) After refusing to give the people’s names, the court tries to force him to. He replies with, “I mentioned my wife’s name once and I’ll burn in hell long enough for that. I stand mute.” Lastly, in his life, he was accused of being a witch and was pressed to death. He wouldn’t deny nor confirm and decided being pressed to death will be the best for him because his family will get their land. Instead of admitting to a lie Elizabeth said, “They said he give them but two words. ‘More weight,’ he says. And died.” (p 1113).
