The Appearance of Death and the Character’s Willingness to Approach
First impressions often make or break interpersonal relationships and are nearly impossible to change after there has been an initial interaction. Impression management is utilized in both formal or informal situations and can help send appropriate signals, feelings, and perceptions about yourself when meeting for the first time (Waldeck 23-25). This technique is regularly seen in scripted media and published works to create an automatic response to new characters, whether that be positive or negative. Although her career is based on killing humans, the irony is plainly seen in Death’s physical appearance as a supportive big sister. When Death sits by Morpheus’s side, there is a striking difference in skin color, Morpheus is nearly translucent and Death has a flesh tone, which ironically symbolizes she appears to have blood flowing and thus is more alive despite her title. Many other contradictory images are shown such as how Morpheus is seen exiting through a black hole, whereas Death’s exit consists of blue sparkles. This contrast pushes the reader to draw a clear line between the siblings and presents Death as more attractive than Morpheus. This theory explains how there is likely sadness but no anger felt by the reader when Death claims her next victim. Death also works with proxemics and picks them up as they were likely used to their mother doing, to ensure the baby is comfortable during the passing. As Morpheus accepts what Death has been explaining and Death claims her last victim, Franklin, it is evident she prides herself on safe and knowledgeable passage for her victims. Death goes out of her way to explain to Franklin how he died and takes him by the arm to both guide and provide assurance, an effective application of touch communication to display immediacy (Devito 113-126). Death is able to effectively send all of her victims safely off to the next world because of her ability to interact and connect with the dying
