Apple Antitrust Case The antitrust lawsuit that I chose for my paper is the United States v Apple Inc., in this case the United States argument was that Apple had been in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act by raising the prices of electronic books or e-books. This court case was one that does not start with Apple even being the leader in the e-book industry but ended up surprising many people by having the lawsuit filed against them and six publishing houses. The facts pertaining to this case are that Amazon who had for many years been a monopoly in the electronics book field and to the dismay of the book publishing companies refused to sell the books for a higher price than what they wanted when they …show more content…

When examining this case and all it entailed it led me to the conclusion that not all monopolies are harmful; in this case in particular it was actually more beneficial to the consumer to have Amazon as the primary seller of e-books considering they were willing to have significantly lower prices even when that was not something that the publishers desired. This expresses to me that even though Amazon was willing to price cut to gain a monopoly among the e-book market this benefits the consumer more so than having an oligopoly where price fixing is occurring. The example that I will use of a monopoly being beneficial for the people is one that we have spoken of previously class; that would be an electric company. Having multiple power companies in one city would crowd up the electric lines and cause more of a hazard than it would be a benefit for the people; also there might not be an affordable way for the companies to deliver the power at competitive
