Application Essay: A Career As A Student Conservation Assistant

As a child, I was always the kid that asked “Why?” for everything, as an adult that has manifested into an enthusiasm for helping others answer their various “whys?”. One of the most rewarding parts of every position that I have held has been facilitating learning in others and seeing the moment where they begin to propel themselves forward with the same excitement to learn that I have, whether it is newly discovered or newly rediscovered. It is for that reason, that I am applying for the Program Coordinator position for the Student Conservation Association. While having a degree in Integrated Studies is a little vague, my degree allowed me to explore multiple areas of study from paleoclimatology to civic engagement and even French. My definition has not been limited to what I learned then, but rather has evolved over the years. Participating in the SCA’s National Park Service Academy as a participant and later a peer mentor as well as programs like the Association of Outdoor Recreation’s Emerging Leaders Program is what has continued that evolution my understanding of being an outdoor leader. Building up skills, by pursuing a Leave No Trace Trainer course and a NOLS Wilderness First Responder class, on top of my experience leading peers as a facilitator have provided confidence in my ability to be whatever type of leader is needed as a situation demands, as well as the ability to encourage and empower others to discover that confidence for themselves. One key factor in that empowerment is being accepting and welcoming of people as they are.
